Festival of Stitch 2012 (archive)

Daventry and District Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild hosted the 2012 Festival of Stitch at: Caroline Chisholm School,
Northampton on 28 April 2012.

Clara Sims, Chair of the branch writes:
Things did not bode well for the Festival of Stitch this year when we awoke to driving rain and bitterly cold winds.
However this did not stop the intrepid members of the East Midlands Region, who turned out for what turned out to be an extremely enjoyable day of retail therapy, home-made cakes and an interesting lecture by James Hunting. As usual it is an opportunity for our members to meet old friends and make new ones.
Another highlight of the day was the Finest Stitches exhibition from Head Quarters. It was wonderful to see so many beautiful pieces close up.
Christine Poole gave the Chairman's report, which laid out some of the areas where the guild is moving forward and making progress.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Daventry and District branch who all contributed to make the day a success. A special thank you to the Festival committee for working tirelessly, since that fateful day two years ago when Sue Fowler and myself offered to take on the task!
I would also like to give a special mention to members of Northampton Branch who were a huge help both on the day, and in their contributions.

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and we look forward to the next one!

Featuring:  "Finest Stitches"  an exclusive exhibition of 60 specially selected pieces of work from the Embroiderers' Guild Collection (see slideshow of some images).  It was a joy to see so many of the pieces from the Collection, which are usually only seen in photographs.  This is the first time the Collection has been sent out to members in this way, but it is hoped that it will be repeated with different pieces in future years.

Speaker:  James Hunting  -  "Me, me, me and Stitch"

James gave us an excellent talk, informing us of his journey through his stitching life, starting with numerous years in the couture fashion houses in France, followed by a short period of gardening before going into education, both as a lecturer and later as a student following a M.A. Course at Carlisle.  He is currently overseeing the educational programmes at the Royal School of Needlework.  His personal work is very evocative and after following a variety of different themes he is now working entirely with new linen fabric, which he distresses to his satisfaction and embellishes very minimally with stitch.

There is now a small Committee of members who are looking into the 2013 event which will revert to being called the Regional Day. It might be that Branches will be asked to be involved in some way: possibly with Raffle, Tombola, Tea/Coffee etc, but further details will be circulated to Chairmen as soon as we are able to.
