Photos from the 2015 Summer School

Summer School 2016 has just finished for 2016 and thank you to the lovely tutors Angie Hughes, Chris Gray and Helen Richman for all their hard work and to everyone who attended who made it such a success.  The staff at Scalford Hall were lovely and did their best to accommodate our requests while also dealing with a large wedding and a twenty first birthday celebration in an almost seamless manner. Photos of the wonderful work will follow shortly.

Summer School is open to stitchers of all abilities, whether you are a complete beginner or have been stitching for more years than you care to remember.

Scalford Hall was chosen because it is almost the central point of our widespread region and is one of the few places where all our activities can take place under one roof. The previous two venues had separate eating & sleeping accommodation, ok when the weather's fine but not when it rains!  Added to that it is a nice Country House set in lovely surroundings with excellent food.  We offer approximately 16 hours of tuition starting on the Friday evening through to mid afternoon on Sunday.   The price for the 2015 Summer School was £290 which is similar in cost to using other venues in the area. We also did price comparisons with other summer schools last year and again the price of ours was comparable.   For example Bath’s summer school for last year was £190 without accommodation and East region had a similar offering for £265 but it only included 12 hours of tuition.

Above all Summer School is a place to meet like-minded people in friendly and comfortable surrounding giving you the opportunity to work on developing your stitching techniques for a whole weekend.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of Summer school but if you have any further questions please email Hilary or myself.

This is a workshop on experimental textiles using natural materials such as bark, leaves and moss as inspiration.  Students will learn how to use transfer paints on synthetic fabrics, experiment with dissolvable and soluble materials & study mixed media techniques.  All of these will be used alongside machine & hand embroidery to create pieces of embroidery as heavily textured as we can make it.

Helen Richman – Stumpwork
You will learn the stitches & techniques used in the increasingly popular style of stump work to create a delicate assortment of 3D flowers, leaves, insects, butterflies & dragonflies to make a decorative wreath. These will be slowly built by applying the embroidery onto a small wooden frame, which has been wrapped in ribbon, fabric or thread. www.bluebirdembroidery.co.uk

Chris Gray – Treasured Memories You will be making tri-fold books and panels using treasured items/memories as a theme.  You will use the tutor's vast range of resources of print blocks, screen inks etc to make a start on at least two books.  Each page is worked as a small panel that can be mounted alone if you prefer.  This is your opportunity to use all the interesting bits, photos and treasured purchased that you were going to use one day but never quite got round to it!
